Oral Health Program

Tooth decay (dental caries) affects children in the United States more than any other chronic infectious disease. Untreated tooth decay causes pain and infection that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing and learning. The good news is that tooth decay and other oral diseases that can affect children are preventable. The combination of dental sealants and fluoride has the potential to nearly eliminate tooth decay
in school age children. Coos County Family Health Services is providing area kindergarten through third grade public school classrooms with Oral Health Education.

We offer for students:

Screenings: A free visual exam to students in kindergarten through third grade. Observations include decayed, missing, filled and sealed teeth, hard and soft tissue abnormalities, orthodontic and/or speech concerns, and home care evaluation. Results and recommendations are sent home to the parent.

Prevention: The following in-school services are offered to students who have barriers to regular dental care

1. Dental cleaning
2. Fluoride varnish treatment
3. Diet counseling
4. Oral exams by a volunteer dentist for dental sealant placement
5. Dental sealant placement

Restorative: Depending on need, and current funding, referrals are made to participating community dentists with funding provided by CCFHS.

Additional Programs: Special classroom education programs, Weekly Fluoride Rinse Program and Community Day Care Education Programs.

A donation of $100 puts a smile back on a child suffering from tooth decay.
